Ciacci Piccolomini

In an area known for ancient wine estates, Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is one of the originals. Going back to the 17th Century, the winery was originally owned by the Montalcino diocese, and in the 18th century by Countess Eva Bernini Cerratani. Sold to the Francesco Ciacci in the late 1800's, the winery finally settled on its name after the marriage of Elda Ciacci to Count Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona in the mid 1900's. The history of this winery is basically like watching episodes of the Borgias.

In 1985, with a complete absence of direct successors, the winery was inherited by Giuseppe Bianchini. Giuseppe has worked at the winery for many years, and was considered to be like a son to the existing family. Understanding well the traditions of the winery, Giuseppe maintained the commitment to quality and history. He passed away in 2004, leaving his two children Paolo and Lucia to carry on the traditions at Ciacci Piccolomini.

Ciacci Piccolomini's Brunellos are beautifully finessed and elegant wines. They offer a very pleasing sense of balance in which no one characteristic overpowers the next, and show the trademarks of the southern terroirs of Montalcino.

Their Rosso di Montalcino 'Rossofonte' is not your regular Rosso. It is the top selection from a single-vineyard of Sangiovese grapes from Ciacci Piccolomini's estate vineyards. It is a beautiful expression of Sangiovese, with bright red fruit and balsamic notes, and an excellent balance of silky smooth tannins and acid. This is as close as you can get to Brunello quality while maintaining the Rosso di Montalcino DOC appellation.
